Katana MX changes after maiden.

After Keith re-maidened the Katana for me he mentioned that every time he eased off the throttle the plane tried to lift. Adjusting the thrust angle would help this.

He also suggested that adding a gyro would help when flying in windy conditions.

The thrust angle on the Katana is factory set. I removed the cowl and motor to see if there was any way I could adjust it. I then noticed that someoe had previously inserted a small piece of plywood at one of the motor screws. This was obvliouly what was affecting the handling. Removing this restored the thrust angle to the factory setting.

I am also intending to install a Matek F405 Wing flight controller. This will allow various levels of stabalisation from none (Manual mode) through to full self levelling (Horizon mode) and also give a Return To Home capability.

Katana repairs

I recently acquired a Precision Aerobatics Katana MX which was in need of some repairs.

It had been previously repaired but I needed to make some changes to these. e.g. The elevator servo had been replaced with an analogue servo (the stock servos are all digital).

Here is a list of the repairs so far:

  • Battery connectors
    • The proprietary battery connector was repalced with 2 XT60s wired so that 2 X 3S 2200mAH LiPos could be connected in series.
  • Battery mount
    • Velcro and battery straps added
  • Receiver
    • There was no receiver so I added a Radiomaster DBR4 (Gemini Xrossbabd) and 10 channel CRSF to PWM converter (with vario and voltage sensor). This also required the addition of servo extension leads for the aileron servos.
  • Elevator servo
    • The analogue elevator servo was replaced with a digital servo HiTec D85MG programable digital metal gear servo. The original stock servos are HiTec HS-5085MG. The D85MG is a direct replacement.
  • Covering and trim
    • Some pieces of covering and trim that were coming away were secured with ca glue.
    • A piece of covering had been removed from the fuselage. This is to be replaced.
  • Wing locator rod
    • one of the 4mm carbon fibre rods used to locate the starboard wing was missing. A new piece of 4mm carbon rod was epoxied into place.
