Piper J3 Cub build notes

The kit that I have seems to have some extra parts. (e.g. too many wing ribs).  The instructions are also incomplete.  I was able to find instructions online (https://www.centuryuk.com/docs/DW/J3%20Cub%201.2M%20-%20S08/j3.pdf) for a similar model (possibly a later revision), they are still not great however and even seem to have some mistakes.

I will put some notes here which will hopefully help other builders.

  • Wings
    • Wing ribs - The online instructions show the wing as having 2 wing rib types (C1 & C2). The parts pictures show 3 rib types although only 2 are given names.  I have called the 3rd rib type C1b. In my kit the innermost rib is type C2 and the next 2 are type C1b, the rest are C1. The online instructions have an extra inboard rib therefore the 2nd, 3rd & 4th ribs will be C1.
    • I found it useful to place sheet balsa (A3, A4 & A5) in their correct positions to help keep the ribs level while the glue is setting.
